Sculpture Garden in Abington, PA
Project Overview
Before this project, this yard in Abington contained many weeds, a few ferns, and lots of empty space. Keystone Permaculture redesigned the landscape by planting a native mix of shade-tolerant plants, chosen to provide blooms across three seasons.
At the center, we placed a kinetic sculpture that gives the garden something structural to contrast the foliage below. Its motion adds a little life and movement to a space that would otherwise be fairly static. This garden installation has transformed the landscape into a lush and full native garden with seasonal blooms that bring ecological value.
The Challenge
The garden is located at the focal point of this client's home. Prior to the garden installation, the garden area provided little to no curb appeal with the overgrown weeds and sparse garden bed. Now the space welcomes you as you arrive and gives you something interesting to look at from the porch.
One of the biggest challenges with this yard was the deer that call it home. To mitigate deer browsing the garden, we planted deer-resistant native plants. When choosing the native plants, we also had to ensure they could tolerate the shady landscape. Additionally, the existing cobblestone border had started to settle over time, so we lifted and reset it as part of the project, giving the garden a cleaner edge and bringing the whole space back together.
